Broken Cast Belt Pulley

Hey guys,

I picked up a cast belt pulley as an early Father"s Day gift for Dad. Well, UPS dropped it and broke a piece out of the back edge.

UPS probably won"t make good on insurance because they"ll claim it was inadequately packed.

If I took it to a professional welder, what are the chances of a functional repair? I mean, could someone that is experienced in welding cast fix it so that it could be used again? Not that we"d ever use it, but if it"s bolted on the tractor someone"s likely to put the pulley drive in gear and let out the clutch. I don"t want pieces flying, or the tractor shaking apart.

Dennis,

Find a shop that does o/a cast repair,

that way the material that is used to weld

it is the same material as the pulley. If

you can't find one local , put it in a box

and I can do it for you.

The manifold in the pict is repairable and

I did repair it , pictures are in the link

under kelvins manifold .

I don't know how to say this nicely, ups sucks. Thats the best I can do. I had a 24" Browning Sheave delivered the same way. The people they hire have no respect at all for what they are handling, other peoples property. That 100.00 insurance is a joke, as you say, "not packed well enough" thats their reply. My new gas tank came for my truck a few months ago, falling out of the ripped up box. I can't believe it didn't leak, they just beat the crap out of everything.

If you take it to the right welding shop your chances of a functional repair are good, probably much better than the chance of you finding a good cast welder. If they do not have a good understanding of the effects of expanding and contracting on cast iron, then keep looking. I can weld cast iron as good as the next guy if it is a stove leg or a drain pipe, but a pulley turning 500rpm, NO way. I had a crack in a big cast clutch pulley repaired this year, $50 per inch of crack, but the work done was beatiful and the pulley is still round. So, unless you a dealing with something rare like a Hoyt-Clagwell 40-65, you may be ahead to look for another pulley.

i have welded them. it depends on how bad it is. one piece doesn't scare me. more than one is bad. keep after ups. is it rare? some pulleys are cheap here and some not.

Try to discuss it with UPS, They speared a fork through a computer I shipped (an obsolete low production apple III) and they payed for a new component for the Keyboard surround (at more than the original cost of the computer) If there was a photo of it before, and after, I think it stands a good chance, Cast steel/iron takes a powerful blow to break it, and they know that. I'm sure it can be done. Finding a welder that wants to tackle it might be another story, but maybe you already know of one?

Keeping it in balance shouldn't be that much of an issue due to the relatively low RPM.
