I"m thinking of taking a container ship to Australia that has three rooms on it. One of the warnings in the paper woprk is if your have had joint replacement, which I have (hips), the vibration of the engines might make the trip very painful to where you would actually have to get off the ship. Have any of you old farmers that have had joint replacements taken a long trip on a ship and how did it go? thanks

I have had both shoulders replaced and I would sooner take that trip now than before.

Merele, thanks for your comments. I agree with you I wouldn"t even think of the trip before the hip replacement. Nopain now and can farm with no problems. I didn"t know they replace shoulders also. I have no idea what the medical form is talking about so thought I"d ask for others experience. thanks

thanks guys for your comments. This is a 18 day trip to Sydney from Los Angeles, with one stop in Auckland for a couple days, on a container ship. It's 14 hours on a plane, which I can't hardly stand the thought of or 18 days on the boat. All our ancient relatives made crossings from Europe so guess I could. If I do it I'll let you if I get off in mid ocean.

I have an inlaw with hip replacements his opinion of the joints is that his hips nolonger hurt. Seems to me if a person was at the point of needing replacements the boat ride might be much worse than with replaced joints that are in use. Cargo ship constructors may not give much thought (or financial investment) to vibration dampening. From a good friend's testimony Ore boats on the great lakes are seriously noisy and viabrate. Ocean cruse ships would be dampened to allow ultimate comfort. (just thinking) JimN

I find this to be an interesting post and think a good source of opinion would be a bone specialist.Please do not base your decision upon the information that I can give because I have no bone replacements.I went to sea begining near the end of in WW II, 1944.I retired from that profession in 2002 after the better part of fifty six years.I generallry farmed in summers and sailed in winters so averaged about eight or nine months a year on ships.Over that span of time I cannot say that I ever knew of any seaman that had had any joint replacements,if they did have I never heard any complaints.For over twenty years I served on passenger vessels.Almost every bit of that time was as Chief Engineer so I had lots of close contact with the ships doctors and nurses.I never heard of any cases mentioned of discomfort of passengers with the subject condition.Further to that I have never heard of any passenger ship company warning people of suffering from joint replacement as a pre-condition of boarding ship.All ships have vibrations due to propellor operation.Some more than others.I should think that your intended voyage will most likely be a Pacific Ocean crossing that sailing should be calm for the most part unless the route is either great circle north or great circle south.In either case you would stand a good chance of rough weather with attendent heavy vibration.If the company says that the engine is causing the vibration then there is something wrong.The engines should not be a major source of the problem. Most likely this reference is a result of someone in the office that is not real familiar with ship operation.I suggest you call several companies that operate passenger ships because they have lots of elderly folks as customers.Surely many of those people could have had joint repairs.If you still operate tractors what sort of reaction do you have from that kind of vibration.I will be glad to discuss this matter with you at length if you wish to call me at 830-997-8296 or leave a message and I'll return your call.Good Luck,John Cooney

I would ten to agree with Ol Chief...look at how many 1,000's of seniors go on week long or longer cruises and I bet there are a ton of them with joint replacements. The vibrations on a cruise ship shouldn't be different than a cargo ship unless they use better tires for a smoother ride. :-) Good luck on your trip and we will be waiting for a report back!
