Canada to USA Border Crossing

Can someone please explain the procedure and what all is necessary to bring a used tractor or used farm equipment from Canada to the USA if it has been sold by a Canadian individual to a USA individual? I have been told individual sales are treated different from dealer sales and have less requirements to cross but don't know what these requirements are.

Sure....first it was our southern border. Now...the northern front. You know what this will mean. "THOSE" tractors will want free housing; demand clean fluids; come into this country with Canadian air smuggled in the tires; fuel in the tanks that wasn"t purchased here; some w/o rain caps [condoms]; there will undoubtedly be an unequal number of colors; you bunch of trouble-makers

Prior posts on this topic indicate issues with tractors not produced in the USA being more difficult to bring in. If it is a US tractor there is no issue other than ownership as Hugh indicates. Do check and clean. Jimn

Harold: Have a bill of sale or invoice from seller that clearly states his address and yours. Make sure the tractor is clean, as in soil, oil and grease. Best have it preasure washed before leaving Canada.

If you call US customs before you leave home, tell them what you are doing, there are systems whereby you can fax all information to them from point of purchase, advising you expected crossing time and the point of entry. That is not manditory or necessary, but it seems to speed things up. I'm basically going from experience, and the premis that crooks don't usually fax ahead to anounce their expected arrival.

Would you happen to know why it's important to have it clean? Is it to make serial numbers, etc. visible?

Or...Is it maybe for agricultural pest control? I used to work for a manufacturer of bakery equipment. One day we received a machine (to rebuild) from somewhere in Central America. You should have seen the number and the SIZES of the cockroaches that crawled out of that thing!

Just curious about the requirement.

Rumplstiltskin, you are correct, it is to ensure the tractor did not come off of a farm , with manure, mud,etc stuck to it that could carry infectious disease such as bovine diseases and so on. Having the tractor washed clean makes the crossing much easier although I have heard of tractors being pulled over and requiring a disinfectant spraying before being allowed to enter. This would be rare I think, usually as Hugh stated , if your paper work is in order you will be on your way.
