Hi , Just talked to Old and he said everythings fine so far . The temps got up into the low thirties today and melted some of the ice but that caused more problems for the line crews fixing the downed lines . He said he got power back for about 10 seconds today before the line shorted out again somewhere . He's got the house warm with a propane heater but the stick is still in his roof . He still hasn't got his generator to put out 220 so still no water pump . Anyone have any knowledge of Kohler generators ? He still needs advice on the wiring . It puts out enough to run the fridge and a hotplate like David said so they can have warm meals . They are under a winter storm warning so it might get bad again before Sunday or Monday . ...Randy

If you have a voltmeter, with the generator running, check for 240volts across any 2 "hot" [narrow blade slots] on any of the 120 volt outlets. If you find 240 volts, mark these with a pencil. You will have to use 2 plugs & 2 wires to "jury rig" a connection to your pump. If you aren't confident about doing this, better not try. Really feel sorry for you & all the others without electricity.

Randy...I'm glad you talked to Old. I talked to GeneP yesterday, and he said he was going to call him as well. The other day when I talked to Old on the phone, he said Keith had called from Oregon and they talked for over an hour. He said he appreciated all the concern from his YT friends. David

I'm BACK on line again. Power came on around 8:45 PM tonight and I'm going to have fun fixing things up tomorrow. Well pipe broke about 10 foot down in the well so I have to pull the pump part way up tomorrow and fix that and then got to the roof problem etc, etc, etc. Thanks for checking up on me by the way, makes a guy feel needed when people call and ask about me.

Interesting fact on pipes freezing. Pipes freeze where they are coldest, but the freezing does not break the pipe at that spot. The freezing water applies pressure on the remaining water in the pipe against a closed valve or check valve. When this happens the pipe is expanded in its weekest spot in that section of closed space. This is why sill cocks always break on the inside of the rim joist, near the threads/cweat connection end. It is also why leaving things running can prevent cracked pipes. If things do freeze, open the faucet asap to limit dammage. This might not help , but it is interesting. Good fortune Old, you and your family are strong, and a fine part of this extended group. Welcome back to the forum. JimN

I got lucky the pipe wasn't broken but when the power came on it popped a splice in the pipe off. My well system is set up with that black plastic type pipe and the splice just popped and to fix it I just had to cut off about an inch of pipe and reclamp it back on. So I now have water next project is thawing the hoses to the hores water tank and chicken tank

As little wood as I burn I'll have a 100 years worth once I start cleaning things up. It started snowing here at around 3PM and in less then an hour we had 1/2 inch of the stuff. Was nice talking to you last night you guys kept me from climbing the walls when I was sort of trapped in the house those 6 days

Without knowing what model he has it would be almost impossible to guess remotely why he's not getting 240 volts, except that a lot of older generators only produced 115 volt.

Here's a website with a bunch of info on older Kohler generators. If you can find out the model number from Old, you could also try posting the question on the Kohler generator board at www.smokstak.com

Not having it as rough as you up there, but no power today. Now power is on and the water is off. 50 miles from me they are having a rough time also. Cousin said the fences looked like a solid sheet of ice.

Hang in there looks like i got to tote a little water myself.
