O.K. so 30 years ago my brother-in-law and I found a guy with a small tractor salvage yard 25 miles from us that had a complete set of steel wheels for an H. We were in the market cause we wanted to use the tractor on our one farm that we use for pasture, but mainly seem only to grow thorny locust, thorny hedge, and normal cottonwood trees. Place also full of ditches creeks, ravines, and scores of damn deer.

The wheels are listed in the IH parts manual as the 51" X 2" thin channel (I think) with heavy cast two prong lugs. Cost us a fortune back then, $200 or $300 dollars if memory serves me right.

Only thing I don't know is what the designed purpose of these "special" wheels was versus the standard channel 6" wide units with small single spikes.

I'm assuming, as my grandfather whom use to deliver mail in rural NE said, "Henry's As & Ts got me through the roads without ever getting stuck. Eventually you dig deep enough you hit solid ground." In otherwords mud wheels.

We are still using that H with a homemade fixed arm three-point that we mount our self contained mist blower too and spray for thistle & rhubarb, up to sixty yards. Works fine, being a fixed arm 3P by the way, as long as when you unhook the rig you put it on top of something the right height.

But I digress as usual - anyone know the real intent for these "special" steel wheel setup?

Thx skk

Not special, very common in vegetable growing areas, we had one. We planted vegetables in 20 inch rows, requiring a 9 inch tire tread, although you could get by with 10 inch. On a relatively heavy tractor like the H (as compared to our other cultivating tractor,(a B), that causes compaction, so we used the narrow steel for cultivation, switched to 11-38 rubber for tillage, when cultivation season was over.

I meant they were nothing special to us as they were common. IH does call some things "special" for some reason, perhaps because they weren't needed in all farm areas. They wouldn't have sold many outside the vegetable growing areas, unless someone comes up with another purpose. Steel wheels are rough on hard surfaces, they aren't even noticeable on tilled soil. You were limited to 4th gear because they won't even turn in 5th, because it was direct drive -- 5th was not locked out on our tractor because it came on rubber.

Hey CNKS. IH calls them "special" in their parts book. Whom am I to disagree. I can say, but you already know, they ride ruffer than a cob!

I would also say they were for standing-crop operations. A lot more f20s had them, but I've seen several H's here in NE with "skeleton" steel. I currently use a pair of them as something to mow around.

Ah now that is a crying shame. You should at least prop them up in your wife's flower garden as a conversation piece!
