Farmall A Carburetor

I've exhausted my limited mechanical knowlege and it's time to ask the experts. I've got a 1940 Farmall A that has a zenith carburetor on it. The problem is that I can't seem to get the tractor to run unless the choke is almost completely out. Generally, doesn't that mean that the engine is starving for fuel? I've put in a carb kit, cleaned out the fuel line and taken the gas tank and sediment bowl off and cleaned them as well. Still, will only run with the choke almost completely out. What have I missed?

looks like everyone has a good idea, but i have had the exact same thing, and here is what my prob was.

on the bottom and facing toward the front of the tractor there is a plug. (not the bowl drain plug) but facing the front, not down. remove it, and then there is a jet in there, you will need a flat screw driver (make sure it fits good) or you will booger or break the sides, remove it, you will probably find a piece of crud or junk in it. clean it, and replace it. if no crud, then buy a can or 10 of carb cleaner with the straws, and spray right in where the jet was, trying to put presure all the way through to push out any gunk in it.

that helped me, i used to have to keep the choke pulled every time i went to mow the grass with my super a and ill i had to do is remove that plug and take tweasers and remove a piece of bug or something like it out of the jet, runs great now.

hope this helps

The piece missing may be flow. The fuel needs to flow out of the needle and seat in the float chamber about a 1/8" stream. If it does this it has supply. If not it is plugged some where. just above the seat is one place, in the fuel inlet to the carb is another, and finally the sediment bowl and screen , and pickup tube.
If it flows there, it may have plugged up main jets in the carb, low float level, a broken off part of a jet pickup tube, or an air leak at or beyond the carb to the head. any of these can cause the problem. If you suspect an air leak searching for it with an unlit propane torch can be useful (do it outside and be careful)pass the unlit torch nozzle around on the gaskets and intake manifold while it is running. If the speed picks up, you have a leak. Good luck, keep posting until it is fixed. JimN

Sounds like you still have a clogged main jet. Is it one with the adjustable main jet or the type you can't adjust?? If its the type you can't adjust then heres some thing that might work. Pull off the jet cover plug and turn on the gas. You should get a good steady flow of gas if you don't then pull the drain plug turn off the gas and use spray carb cleaner in the main jet and spray it out good letting it flow out the drain. Some times that will open up the main jet enough for it to run well

I have to agree with Old on this one. I had the same problem on my 42 A a couple months back and it ended up being a clogged main jet. Try what Old suggested and go from there.

I will assume that you were thorough in cleaning the carb? The crud can hide really good sometimes. Is the float level correct? Maybe the two carb halves are warped, and you are not getting a good seal, thus allowing a vacuum leak? A vacuum leak can also result with a poor carb to manifold gasket, or manifold to head gaskets. What about the fuel inlet fitting? There should be a fine mesh screen in there also that gets plugged up sometimes. One more thought--have you tried running it with gas tank cap removed?

Double checked the float level earlier and it is at the correct height. The fuel inlet screen is also clean. There was a some dampness on the bottom half of the carb where the two halves come together. Tightened the screws and it doesn't seem to be seeping anymore but the performance hasn't changed. Still need to try old's suggestion with the main jets and janicholson's suggestion with the propane to find a leak. Thanks all for the help and I'll keep ya'll posted.

re my comment on thoroughly clean. I have rebuilt several carbs that were so plugged up the carb cleaner wouldn't touch it. Time to get out the wire torch tip cleaning tools.

You're probably right, I'll bet I wasn't as thorough cleaning it as I thought. I'll let you know what I find and thanks for the help
