Does anyone have any idea how many SMTA's had distillate motors? Thanks for your help.

One earlier post talked about the use of suffix codes for the distillate in the late 40's but not early on. That implies that they were more or less standard and gas only was considered the "special". Up until the end of WWII gas was more expensive or rationed so common sense says fewer gas only units. Later gas was cheaper and more readily available so gas only became standard with kerosene the 'special'. Distillate, or 'tractor gas' went out of production entirely, I was told during the war.

I have always wondered about the availability of certain items during WWII. I have been told gas and rubber were in short supply. My maternal grandpa's M is still on our farm. He bought it next thing to new. It's a 1945 model with 4 rubber tires and a gasoline only engine. My dad has a picture of his father on a styled Oliver 70, also with 4 rubber tires, parked by a gasoline pump with the hose in the tank. The pump was the kind with the glass canister that you filled up. It has a Sinclair dinosaur on it and reads GASOLINE. The back reads June 1944. I realize the tires could have been from a pre-war tractor and put on the newer one. But what about the gas? Maybe finally getting some on the farm was such a monumentous occasion, they decided it deserved a picture!

it must be a secret because nobody knows. they were common in the south. low compression engines were available thru the 450's

i dont think any smta had a dislate motor, beacuse they stoped using dislate motors in the high 40's i think becuase my 50' M had the gas engine,and my 42' H has the dislate motor.

IH sold Kerosene or distillate engines through the 450. Gasoline engines were available possibly in 1939, for sure by March 1940.

Baxter, Please don't mistake this for anything but constructive discourse. The distillate systems were offered as optional, not standard. As time went by, change in costs of fuel, and convienience made them less and less popular with farmers. They (to the best of my understanding shipping distillate 450s. Guy Fey may know more about the facts, but they were there. Keep thinking and reading the archives. Your friend JimN
