D Slater is correct. I will add that the effect of this lettering and sizing is to cause a bit of hassle in fitting sleeves. Sleeves fit into that bore with a interference fit. The sleve is frozen so that it shrinks and the block is heated so it expands. The sleve is then inserted in the bore rather rapidly to the seating of the top flange in its groove. A bore with an "A" or "B" stamp will usually be fine for sleeves commonly found aftermarket. C may be OK as well. "D" bores will be loose, and may need to be select fit from the sleeves to find a tight one, or be purchased seperately to fit correctly. A loose sleeve will fail in two ways. Either because it stress cracks at the top where it flanges (resulting in the body of the sleeve traveling downward into the crank and rods, which is very not good) or through poor heat condiction and cooling resulting in overheated pistons. I hope this explanation helps, JimN

When the factory finished the bore in blocks they did'nt turn out exactly the same size. Finish bore was measured and marked with code letters A through D with A smallest and D largest.
I'm not refering to a size change you can see with your eyes.
