I like Randy Leffingwell's "Farmall Eight Decades of Innovation."

My wife got me "The Great Big Book of Farmalls" for Christmas, and thats aabout all it is, just the Farmalls. No Internationals, McCormick Deerings, nothing but Farmalls! Not much info either but good pics! I really dont like the info in 150 Years of IH, although the crawlers seem to be laid out pretty good.

Hugh MacKay (hope I spelled that right) recommended a book to me a couple of years back called "150 Years of International Harvester" by Wendel. It is out of print but can be found on ebay. Pretty decent pictorial history of the company and their various product lines. I have gotten a lot of hours of pleasure out of it. You might want to consider it.

Dave: You got it right, however I'm not one of these guys to get upset over Mc or Mac.

About the book, 150 years of IH, I got checked up about a month ago by bermuda ken if I remember correctly. He told us that Wendel found a new publisher and the book is back on the market. Wendel had been in quite a heated debate with the old publisher.

Wendel also has other books. I have his Oliver book, Encylopedia of American Farm Tractors and his Nebraska test book. He did other companies, not quite sure which ones. Something rings a bell on Deere, Case, Allis and MH. Maybe someone can confirm or deny this.

Guy's book is very informative, but doesn't get into too much specific detail per model, as unfortunately it appears some of the "nitty-gritty" has likely been lost to history.

As Guy notes, the original "build sheets" are gone. You get conflicting information, even challenges to Guy's research. He looked at I think 30,000 documents.

You absolutely need to get Guy's book and read cover to cover, as it has interlacing facts dispersed throughout. I would recommend it as your beginning point.

I have been trying to piece together exactly what you are asking for for the H & M models. However, just when I think I have started to get it narrowed down, another surprise comes along. I hope to eventually create a PDF file with documentation and photos for general access by all, but it will take time.

If you can find original tractors, family owned units, you get a fairly good picture of what was commonly shipped out of the factory. Talk to everyone you can find with silver or gray hair, and write it all down.

If you come across something good, pls pass along.

Good luck.

Most of those guys with gray and silver hair weren't born yet when the F-20s came off the line!

Quite a bit of nitty gritty survives, but is difficult to put into book form without trying to sell encyclopedias- the data book had problems getting bound by the binder, for instance, because it went many pages over the specification.

Darn publisher's have no sense of humor or feel for the "the red addiction."

So paper has limitations, there are crystal cubes now in R&D that can hold all of the written information ever published.

If the there are details avl, how and where does the average enthusiast obtain the information?

Best little book about Farmalls is Guy Fay's IH Data tractor Book. Very good book with serial numbers, cast codes, all kinds of info. There cheep too like $10.00 heck I keep one in the house and one under the seat of my truck. Also for big picture books the Big Book of Farmalls is a great book too.
