Gotta her going!! I started it 4 times without the gas turned on so I could be sure it would kick back properly if the engine didnt start. Not once did it have any problems!! Also got a new gasket and straightened the cover for the access plate underneath. Thanks for all the observations and confirmations of the problems!!

SOOOO...

Was the drive as I described, screwed together, then staked? I was going to go out to a storage shed today, to get a similar starter, and look at it, but I was too much of a wimp to go out in the COLD!

yep, they staked the crap out of it too, but being close to the end of the bendix shaft threads, it let loose. I decided to screw it back on and use blue loctite as well as a few machine bushings to prevent it from backing off, I put some wheel bearing grease between the bushings to keep them from wearing. I got this kick butt old wheel bearing grease from a thrift store here in town, its gota be 50 years old and still hasnt separated. Its nice and thick to, so I used that to lube the nose bushing as well. Used a qtip with alcohol to clean out the diamond shaped grease retainers in the bushing. I can see how PROPERLY restoring a tractor could lead up to multiple thousands of dollars in a short time. ALOT of parts to replace if you wanna restore them right. Dont think I'll ever be doing that unless I win the lottery.
Once again, thanks, now the only part on my tractor lacking is the charging system, which might get addressed this spring.
