My suggestion would be to order your operator's manual for the tractor; read it, study it and know it. There is a lot of good info in there and what you can't find there, look here.

Hey ronee, Don't get intimidated by what someone says it will cost or how much work it is-I have found that these guys, collectively, know more about red tractors than Case IH ever did. They will be very helpful with any problem you have. You DIDN'T talk abut the engine or tranny so if those are OK you can get the pto clutch assembly rebuilt and to check out the TA (torque amplifier) just pull the handle back for low speed and push it forward for high. Tranny works the same. If back- don't go down hill without brakes because it freewheels. Check everything out and look through the posts or do a search on this site for ur tractor to see what others have had to do. Post a pix if you can figure out how and get set to learn more about your tractor than you might expect. Gook luck.

Rog,

Just for what it's worth, the T/A on a 1066 shouldn't freewheel.

but if it isn't used right it "IS" a weak point!
All tractors have a weak point if the nut behind the wheel is loose!

Oh boy... Sounds like you got hooked by "pwetty wed twaktor" and ended up with a basket case...

The function of the lever on the left hand side of the tractor should be obvious if you pull it while the tractor is moving. It's a two-speed powershift called a Torque Amplifier, or TA. It is NOT a so-called "weak point" on the tractor, IF it is used properly.

If the tractor doesn't downshift when you pull the TA lever, the TA is out too. With all the other problems the tractor has, figure on about $5000 to have them fixed. You can't do it yourself unless you have access to a shop with proper splitting stands and overhead hoists capable of lifting several tons. This tractor is WAY too heavy for a home shop mechanic to do any major work on.

First check your hydro fluid. The stick is down on the floor between your feet close to the dash. If that is ok, I would try to bleed the brakes. Under the operaters platform on each side are the brake assemblys with automotive type bleeder valves. Just bleed them like you would a car.
As far as the pto goes, If your oil level in trans is ok, probably the clutch pack is wore out. It's not that hard of a job to get it out, just a little messy. The one on my 1086 gave out last spring while planting. I took it to my dealer to be rebuilt. With all the clutch packs and discs, he could do it alot faster than me.
Handle on left side? That's the torque amplifier. I can't explain HOW it works, but it's like having another gear there to pull you thru teh TOUGH spots without using the clutch. That is one if IH's weaknesses.
I'm sure someone on here can describe the torque better.
Good Luck
