Hello, I have a 1948 H that I bought to replace a case VAI. I was wondering if this tractor will be able to bale on less than level ground with a MF#3 baler, or did I get too small of a tractor again. By the way the Case was only for tedding. Any thoughts?? Thanks John.

Cousin Jake said that his Dad always baled with a 65 massey ferguson on a JD 14t baler. He put a 1000 to 540 adapter on 4030 JD with a cab. Basically he just idled the big tractor and sat in the cab in comfort. I used his trick on my manure spreader and 2940 JD. 1200 rpm on the engine made the 1000pto turn about 540. I did bale hay once tears ago with an H and a JD466 pto baler. Ground was flat, no wagon. This is a 16x18 baler. Had to bump the tractor into neutral alot when the winrow was heavy but got the job done.

I'm not familar with a MF#3 but it isn't all about horsepower though. Sometimes you just need more tractor to handle a load safely safely. Thats why the Funk 8N conversions never really caught on. I imagine you can get away just fine with an H, but I'd never use anything any smaller than that. Depending on how hilly the land is would determine whether or not to use a wagon behind it. I'd hate to think what might happen if you had to put the major whoas on a baler/wagon loaded with 90+ bales on a somewhat steep hill with a machine of inadequate size.

I am the second owner of a 42 H and a 435 baler. They have baled no tellin' how many bales(many thousands) in their lifetime in the hills of Piedmont NC.

we used to pull our ih 37 baler with our h. it did ok. slow going. and the tractor is small and the plunger just jerked the tractor around. the 560 did better but our 966 was the way to go. always had enough power to go through the heavy spots. guess it depends on much you have to bale. sometimes bigger is better.

I am 65 now. Used to do custom hay baling when I was 12 for my Dad with an H Farmall and a very heavy 77 NEw Holland baler in the hills of eastern Iowa. Still have the 1946 H Farmall.

No grief. Pull a wagon where it is level"ER" and pick up bales from the ground where hilly. If the bailer is PTO driven, get used to taking the H out of gear befor it encounters real heavy hay to avoid over packing it. A PTO one way clutch is also not a bad idea to prevent flywheel action continuing to push the tractor. (It may have these items, But telling you is important) JimN

Your H will do just fine. Sometimes for fun I bale with my Farmall B with a MF#3 baler like you have.

While an H MAY do it, an M would be sooooo ooooo much better.

Used an H and International 45 baler and pulled wagon up to 100 bales on lightly rolled land for years. Never had a problem.

Al-VA In New Hampshire there is no such thing as lightly rolled land. Its the side of a mountain, MT Sunapee to be exact. I am tired of buying hay from NY state the shipping is killing me.

The H will work just fine. We used a Farmall BN on a NH 66 baler for years and that is 2 sixes smaller.
