I am having trouble getting a International M that has been sitting in my grandparents shed for 20 years started.I have cleaned the fuel and air system out and drained the oil out and put fresh oil and a fresh oil filter in it.I got a new 6 volt battery for it also. It will crank it just isn't gettin spark, I have checked the plugs, plug wires, and the distributor.I am not getting power to any of it. Could it be the coil or some faulty wiring? I have never really worked on tractors that much before so bare with me. Thanks, Austin

I have the battery hooked up correctly, and yes it does have a coil. The wiring does have some bare spots but they are not touching anything that i can see so that should not be a problem. The points were amazingly still clean when i looked at them. It could be the on/off switch now that i think about it beacause when i tested the wires there was not any current coming through them.

Austin: In that case, I think I'd jump that switch and see what happens. Still, don't be surprised if you have to change out the condensor and/or maybe even the coil. Good luck. Let is know what happens. mike

I went out and looked at the ignition wire that goes to the coil again and i think it may be bad so i will replace that and see if that works. Thanks for the help Mike, Austin

It could be the coil, the points, the condenser or the on/off ignition switch. I would most definitely change out the points and condensor if I was working on a tractor with no spark and which had been sitting for 20 years. From there, I would check out the ignition wiring for frayed bare spots which could short, and then I would change the coil. Are you sure you have a coil? You said you have not worked on tractors that much before; many of the M's had magneto ignitions instead of the battery ignitions which had coils. Do you have the battery hooked up correctly? If it is still 6v, it is most likely positive ground - the opposite of machines today. mike
