Hi, I just got my new brakes linings along with one brake pinion bearing and two seals. While removing the differential carrier(the piece that the bearing and one seals goes into, I broke two thin shims so can I just use a gasket to replace these shims?

My second question is: How do you set the brakes? especially the screw that is at the bottom of the brake cover?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Place a small amount of grease in the hole where the brake pivot goes into the transmission housing. After installing the bands & getting the pedal free-play to about 1", apply the brakes firmly, lock them in place and adjust the setscrew on the bottom side of the cover. (helps to loosen any adjustable parts BEFORE re-assembly) Loosen the jam nut, turn the set screw in until it touches the brake band, back out 1/2 turn & lock the jam nut. This helps prevent the brake from dragging, premature wear, and overheating.

The shims effect the adjustment of the differential. They need to be replaced exactly as they were, and the gasket needs to be the same thickness. Take the old shims to a parts yard and see if they have any. I think they come in three different thickness. ken

Guyzoo, I see Neblinc reposted my post, that's about it. Sometimes those clevis' can be siezed and you'll need to heat them and cool quickly to get them to break free, then put some of the silver anti-sieze on and they won't rust shut ever again. Some guys have had a lot of trouble with brake bands from different manufacturers in that they are slightly longer and they can't get adjustment, I hope you are OK there. Once done you should be able to slide both rear wheels simultaneously. Check the trans housing where the brake lever sets in, there are brass bushings in there, or supposed to be. You can likely make your own out of a piece of brass stock rolled up, I got charged almost $10 each for the brass bushings. I also put lots of grease in the hole so it lubes and won't rust or sieze. I got two H's and did the brakes on both. I scrounged around a few tractor wreckers and bought extra brake pans and a real good set of used bands, an extra adjustment clevis just for on hand parts. Once they are working right those H brakes will last a long time

I just have a link to part of your question.
