When they are apart, I have found, looking particularly carefully at the grooves in the ramps will tell much of the story. As aluded to By T Vet, the ramps get wear spots at he point they were operating for years. These wear spots are very slight depressions that will allow the balls to "fall" into them when applied. The result is instantaneous locking of the brake, and even more wear in the dent I am refering to. Very careful removal of that depression using a stone of exactly the correct size (in all 12 grooves) willwork. Getting different disks will cause them to be running in a new location, Machining the housing will also change the dynamics. The best is new/replacement expander setups. The disks wear so slowly that the wear on the ramps is focused on one spot on each ramp. Ball roundness is important, but only found in a few instances. JimN

You can get small squirt tubes of graphite for lubricating locks at Walmart etc. It comes either dry or with a liquid baxe. I have found it stays where you put it very well and does not attract dirt. Very fine texture and very slippery.

Just a bit of thought.....had you paid attention about the disk brake orientation? I know that if the disk brakes are installed "upside down" that you may find yourself with a locking brake. Let me explain, remove the brake outer shell, and then you get to the balls/guides/disk area. Keep in mind, you can easily flip the ball and expanding plates assembly in the wrong way, kind of like a 6 oclock to noon orientation. I know, I did this and the locking brake syndrome occurred. If need be, I describe in more detail, keep in mind that the disk expanding section can be flipped. Hope this helps,

Dennis.

I have did many disc brake jobs from the letter series up through the 656 series and they are all the same and there is no wrong way to put them together. both plates are identical. The main thing to do is to clean any contact points where the actuators touch the drums.

I never thought about that. I thought they could go on either way no direction. I looked in the manual when repaing them and nothing was said about that. However it makes sence, soo what is the correct side up? cause Im not really sure?

thank you

Andrew

You can most likely use speedometer cable lube. It does have a fluid carrier that evaporates in short order. It is gaphite based as well

John Deere used to have powdered graphite. Also check with someone that does shotgun reloading. It is used with reclaimed shot.

Clean up the ramps buy some new balls that are cromed or stainless and use graphit(SP) to lube the ramps and amke sure that there is not a bunch of ware in the drums if you are pulling the plates all the way out to the end of the ramps then you will have to have some of the drum milled off so that with new disc and everything stacked in the drum that you do not have more then about and 1/8th of and inch clearance .between the edge of the drum to the top of the disc.

By enclosing an abbreviation such as the tractor vet did, he means he's not sure of the spelling. (SP) or (sp) means not sure of the spelling - the correct spelling in this case was graphite.
