I finally got my pistons in. Thanks for all the suggestions. They were all workable, but I picked the simplest one and got 6 in a row in with no problems. The original post is in the link. Basically I did what RD/Oh and Old suggested, that is tap the compressor lightly into the sleeve, then tap the piston with a hammer handle -- worked every time. I also did what Tractor vet and others suggested, that is tighten the compressor as tight as I could get it. Makes it harder to slide the piston, but it worked. As usual, the "major" problems that I think I have always have very simple solutions. Thanks for everyone's help.

Did you also use a good bit of some type of lube doing it. The only thing I ever use STP oil treatment for is when I put an engine togeather and it works just great as a prelube assembly lube. Stays on for ever and is slick as snot. I also coat my hands with it since the acid in your fingers can leave finger prints on bearings like the rod and mains. Seen a good number of engines with finger prints on them when they are opened up to do a rebuild

I bought some assembly lubricant (don't remember the name) from the parts place/machine shop that did my machine work and sold me the engine kit. Not as heavy as grease but won't flow like oil. Seems to work ok, doesn't seem to hurt my hands, yet. I imagine there are a lot of other things that will work.
