I got about 3 quarts of anti-freeze / water in the crankcase. Does this mean the block is cracked or are there freeze plugs somewhere that let go. Thanks.

The H and 4 Series engines also have these plugs, 2 at one and 1 at the other. Will have to lift the engine out of my W-4 to replace a leaking one. I think these holes in the block were to make it easier to clear the core sand out of the water passages after the casting came out of the mould. Sid.

Do any of the MDs have this freeze plug?

I would have the head magna-fluxed for cracks if a new gasket doesn't stop the leakage. Hal

Could be, or if you are lucky, no. -- check the head gasket first, then the head. I think all the freeze plugs open to the outside.

There is a soft plug behind the timing cover plate on the front of the engine. They are known to rot out. Bad thing is, you have to tear the whole front of the motor to get to it. I usually take the oil pan off, lay a piece of cardboard under the motor, make sure it's full of antifreeze, if it drips from the very front it's that soft plug. But, also could be the head. Good Luck!

I should not have made that statement. There could also be one at the rear of the engine covered by the rear cover/engine support. My parts book says a total of 3, for SN #'s 501-82498, or 1939-early 1945.

That soft plug is not on all M engines. I have one with, two without, and one block sitting out that "had' one in it.

I think youre right.Neither of my 41s have them, but they both have later IH repalcement engines. My 40 does, and the block I have is off of one of my 41s,which does.

This is on the block I have.Went thru 3 head gaskets, two heads and hours of work before finding this. Its strange, this engine ran perfect. We would run it just above idle for hours at a time and no water would ever get in the oil.But go out the next morning and you could drain a gallon or more out of the top petcock on the pan.We used a IH repalcement block we had sitting around and used everything out of this engine, sleeves rings, pistons bearings and all.It runs just as good.
