Currently working on the steering mechanism on my Super A restoration project. It's got a 3/4 turn in the steering either way before it starts to actually turn the wheels. Taking it apart I found that the key way for the woodruff key on the shaft is very worn out. But the actual steering arm is more interesting! Also, the cap for the steering shaft had been giving me problems. Couldn't get it to budge. I brought the whole housing down to a mechanic friend of mine with visions of giving it the heat treatment. He unscrewed it with his fingers. All I could muster was a stupid blank look. Must have been the PBlaster I had squirted it with a month an a half ago.

I had the same problem when I restored my 49. I took the shaft to a machine shop and they cut the keyways for both ends of the shaft to the next size larger. They also cleaned the gear and ptman arm keyway sa well. Went from half a turn freeplay to an eighth of a turn freeplay and took about an hour. I also did a complete rebuild of the gearbox to include seals, bearings and bushings. Word of caution, getting the old bushings out can be a pain. Just take your time. I used an old socket as a driver to drive them out. I made a bushing press bu using threaded rod and a series of washers to pull the bushing in place. It does help to freeze the bushing first. Hope this helps some.

I've got the whole assembly apart except for the shaft and gear. It's still tight and I'll need to use a press to get the gear off of the shaft. I'm thinking of purchasing a new shaft anyway since the key way is quite worn. I'm going to order a rebuild kit as well as the castle nut is boogered but good! All bolts and lock washers will be replaced.

The tractor was supposedly rolled sometime in its past. I've found damage all over that supports this. I guess I'll need to keep an eye on ebay or give a call to Bates Corp. for a replacement steering arm. I think I may call the local Case IH dealer an see if they can source one.

Since you have that much apart mite as well finish the job. There is a key on the gear in the steering box that may be worn also. I would replace the seals and bushings too. The bearing on the end of the steering shaft mite also need replacing doesent take too much a little here and a litel there. If that key was loose the arn should have fell off. Better keep on looking as i bet there is more problems. I have rebuilt several.

My 100 turns about half a wheel before engaging the sector shaft. I wont have a chance until this spring to look it over. Good info, thx.
