Hi, my father has Case IH 3230 mfd, with a 2255 bucket. We do several things with this tractor including plowing snow in the winter and planting and bush hogging in the spring and summer. This tractor lags in power especially in the road gear...it just can"t seem to open up. We put a new air filter in it, a new front crank seal this summer and the fuel inj. pump was looked over...all done at the Case IH dealer. This tractor is supposed to put out 52hp at the pto. Is there anything at all that can be done to this tractor to get more power out of it. It us just very frustrating to operate. Thanks for any info. Jon in NY

Pride, is the fuel filter dirty? Should change
those at least twice a year. Waiting until they
loose power usually causes damag to the fuel system.

I think dad changes them every spring. I will ask him tonight, but you are right, they could be dirty. I also have to check the fuel shut-off and have it dyno"ed as the other gentlemen made me aware of. Man, that darn 4wd...everything is in good condition (the tractor is really nice, well kept) and works great, but it almost seems like that 4wd takes alot of exta push when compared to a 2wd. When I pull her wide open she just bogs and smokes black until she slowly gets at top RPMs...even in third gear high range with the bucket on or off the tractor...winter or summer. I can"t even touch 4th gear on the road hardly. You guys all brought up some really good points, I will check them all. Thanks so much!! Jon in NY

If this is it, it'll be a quick, cheap, easy fix. The fuel shut off cable clamp can slip a little at the clamp down by the injector pump and you might not realize it but it will really act sluggish and powerless. A minute with a screwdriver might get it up to snuff. This happened on my 684 once and on my 664 as well. Both times, my first thought was that the engine had gone weak.

Hi Pride, my brother has a 3230 2WD with a 2250 quick Attach loader on it and it will go up a signifigant hill in road gear. Now it appears to have the slow speed transmission in it as his 684 is at least 1 gear faster. I believe there were 3 different speeds of transmissions for those series of tractors, a slow, medium and high speed.

As someone else said put it on a dyno and open up the injection pump as that D206 engine will put out over 60HP on the PTO if everything is set properly.

I'm with Ia Gary. Take it put it on the dyno and see if it's even putting out what it's supposed to. 52HP means it should be putting out 55HP or more unless it's wore out.

Maybe you're just expecting too much from it. For example, 52HP isn't going to get the tractor moving in road gear if you're trying to pull 5 tons in a wagon up a hill.

It sure sounds like there's something wrong with the tractor, though.

If you really think it is under powered take it and put it on a dyno and check it.

Then play with the fuel pump until it at least gets up to 52HP.

Gary
