Fuel filter change help on D-239 motor

Hi all,my tractor is starting to loose power from time to time I suspect it is the fuel filter as it has been up to -30 here with the wind.Anyway I found a Wix filter # of 33166 and was wondering if anyone had a cross to a fram? Also anyone know the procedure for changing it?(Where to bleed after replacing the filter )thanks Jason

Hello. I also have an IH 250A with a D239. Both fuel filters are the same. The WIX 33166 filter crosses over to a NAPA Gold 3166. You can also get air, oil, and the hydrolic filter at NAPA. If you have the hydrostatic transmission you can get the two filters for it through a Case dealer. I have all the part numbers if you need them.

As the other folks have told you, there is a bleeder plug on top of the dual fuel filter housing. That will probably be all you need to bleed if it was running just before you shut it off to change the filters. But it is possible that you will have to bleed the inlet fuel line where it connects into the fuel pump. If you have to do that you will probably also need to crack the fuel lines at the injectors and crank the engine until it sputters before you tighten them back up.

You mentioned the temps were pretty cold...if you are using #2 diesel I wonder if you are having a jelling problem? I live in Alaska and have to use #1 diesel during the winter months. I start seeing jelling with #2 diesel at temps somewhere around -15 (wind chill doesn't matter). If you do use #1 diesel you should also add some lubricant to the fuel so it will be a little easier on the injectors. I use my tractor for snow removal at temps down to about 25 below. When it's colder than that I don't like to run it.

Hi, if it is a 574 or 684, normally don't have to bleed the injection pump after changing fuel filters.
Here is my method for 684:
1)Run engine until up to normal operating temperature. Shut off.
2)Turn off fuel shut off valves at bottom of fuel tank.
3)Replace 1 or 2 fuel filters depending if your tractor has a 1 or 2 fuel filter system.
4)Open bleed screw on top of both fuel filters. 5)Open fuel shut off valves at bottom of fuel tank and wait for fuel to to come out of bleed screw on top of fuel filter closest to the fuel tank bubble free, then tighten bleed screw.
6)Repeat for next fuel filter if it is a 2 filter system.
7)Open throttle about 1/2, put Stop/Start/Run control lever to the Start position and start the engine. Engine may sputter and miss for a couple seconds then smooth out and then put Stop/Start/Run to Run position.

If engine fails to start then you will have to bleed injection pump and possibly crack an injector line.

Note: A small positive air pressure applied to the fuel tank will assist the bleeding process.

Thanks Jim, after two trips to napa as someone changed the whole filter assy the painted the filter canister.I had to have them match one up as it seems to be an odd size.I tried to bleed the filter and could get no fuel as when they mounted new filter it was higher than the tank!I took a foot pump for blowing up rafts and drilled a hole through a mason jar lid and installed the end of the air hose into the lid.Held this over the fill neck and cracked the line at the inj pump.It worked like a charm thanks for the air idea.Jason

There should also be a bleed screw on top of your fuel pump. Do the fuel pump after you do the filters.

I don't know about the filter cross, but the filter bracket should have a bleed screw on top. Unscrew it about one turn and wait for fuel to come out. Snug the screw back down and you're done. If you have two inline filters, do the one closest to the tank first.
