Hi guys What brand & size of winch do you use to pull dead tractors on your trailer? The bigest would be a farmall M.

Bill: I plan on using a Warn 9000 just because I have an extra one hanging around. 9000 pounds may be overkill for pulling a tractor onto a trailer, but if I mount the winch on 2 inch square tubing, I have the option of having a decent sized winch for the receiver hitch of my truck.

I use a 3000 lb ffrom Harbor Freight (99.00) with a 35.00 snatch block and loads my M just fine. Some Ms must weigh more than others because all the Guy Fay books list the weight at 4900 lbs with lift all belly pump. I dont have weights or ballast in the tires but rear wheel wweights wont add much to rolling stock. Don't forget, the actual weight of the pull is less unluess you are lifting since it is rolling, not dead weight.

My winch is straight off of a John Deere elevator. I made a couple of modifications so it could be mounted on the trailer. With a 20:1 ratio, it works pretty good--as long as I can find someone who is willing to turn the crank.

Bill this is my setup. I use a 10,000 lb Warn winch. I have it setup so I can use it on both my trailers. The only problem is when I am planning on using the winch,I have to remove my storage box on front of trailer.

I also have a reciever on the front of my 90 Chev and my 95 Ford F350 4x4. HTH

Nice set up. I have an 8,500 lb single line pull Ramsey on a receiver hitch I haven't mounted yet. I'm going to put mine on a heavy post with support gussets/struts that is 18"-24" above the deck. That way I clear the high spot between the flat deck (cable rubbing) and the high point where the beaver tail starts to drop. Maybe something like that will clear your box? I like your idea of round stock to let the winch swivel sometimes the fair lead rollers are not helpful enough.

Keith: I have an extra Warn 9000 winch that I'd like to mount on my trailer. I have been thinking about a reciever mount, just haven't figured out how to do it. It looks like you have the perfect solution. I ordered up most of the parts for the Super C over the weekend.

Chris, you notice the square tubing I have welded on to make the "T", I am going to cut that off and find a piece of round stock to weld on to make my T. that way the winch will beable to swing left or right depending on where I am pulling from.

A farmal M weight @about 5,500#...I would get a 8,ooo# wiench

They have them on sale all the time ---check @ harborfreight.com

You can get a 2:1 mechanical advantage by using a snatchblock on the vehicle you are going to winch.

I use a three ton YALE roller chain comealong. They do the job, are safe, and do not snarl up cable. They are also useful for other things, instead of being mounted for single purpose use. JimN
