I got an M the other day with an X 20 designation on the end of the serial number.
It also has a weird 3 point that bolts right to the rear end housing housing. The axel housings look as if they had something bolted to them on the outside ends. Any ideas would be appreciated.

All 3 point conversions I have seen bolt directly to axle housings including the highly rated Saginaw.

I believe there were actually two different styles of -X20 tractors made. It sounds like yours was originally set up for a High Drum Cotton Picker. It will have a normal tranny top and drive forwards like all regular M's. When it was used under a mounted Cotton Picker, it had drop boxes, like those on the MV or F-20's, bolted to teh fluted axle shafts. Unlike the MV, these drop boxes actually reverse the tractors direction. In addition to the drop boxes, the tractor would have a 20-inch front single wheel and extended fork.

Now, the other style was used under a low-drum picker. these had the standard axles, just like allother M's. To do the direction reversal, the differential/ring gear assembly was rotated such that the ring gear was on the left side. This would interfere with the shifting rails, so a special tranny top was used that moved the shifter to the right side, and had special shift rails and forks.

It is becoming popular to take a tractor like you have, with the fluted axles and drop downs, and add the resersible tranny top to make a faux-MV. It will look like an MV at a distance, but will not be one. Any questions? Hope this helps.

There is no real difference in a cotton picker M and a standard M in fact many worked for years as standard M before picker was installed. The high drum pickers did not require any internal changes and if it has been converted back to standars front wheeles (as I assume it has), throttle and ignition switch are back to standard the axle housing will be only difference I can think of.

Many were converted back to regular tractor and used for tillage and cultivating when cotton picking was complete and then back to picker duty in fall.

Yup, Cotton Harvester. Wish I could find a picture of one, but the M actually drives backwards with this giagantic bin contraption mounted over the hood (the front, but the back as it drives) and in front (the back where the hitch is) is where the harvesting equipment goes.

One was being given away here (lots of cotton fields in fall) because it wasn't running. Nebraska Cowman told me to avoid it because it will be a nightmare!

Code X 20 designates your M came new under a cotton harvestor, which might explain the wierd axle housings. About the unusual 3-point hitch, well, who knows who made that up.... probably "barnyard engineering". mike
