I recently purchased a 1962 IH 240 Utility tractor. It came from the factory without a 3 point hitch. It has the PTO, but no 3 pt hitch. Does anyone know if I can still add this to my tractor or how I should go about doing so?

Thanks much!

I have a 240 Utility with 3ph. Google Case IH parts catalog. Found a page that shows the two point and three point fast hitch. (240 Farmall Tractor (1/58-12/61) 330 Attachments, Bail & Connections, Farmall and International 240 Tractors). Printable diagrams and part numbers also. David.

Factory 3pt is indeed a hard item to find for a 240. IH also made a Factory 2 pt Fast Hitch and Factory 3pt Fast hitch to go along with the 3pt hitch. The 3pt Fast hitch is completely different from the regular 3pt. The 3pt Fast hitch mounts on the same bail assembly as the 2 pt hitch.

You might consider adding a 2pt hitch and getting some slide in balls on points to convert it to a 3 pt. I would have a complete 2pt FH with a 3pt toplink mount or 3pt FH but no toplink for the 3pt FH. It takes a special top link. You are still looking at $4-500 for the complete 2pt unit without adding valves and quadrant assembly. Valves and quadrant would be another $200.

Back in the 1970's Dad had a 240U he did some custom mowing with, and it had the "industrial" 3-point hitch. The lift arms dis not move laterally in an independent fashion, and it was a PITA to hitch up implements with it...which meant that Dad usually kept the brush hog attached all the time, which limited the "utility" of the 240 "Utility." He sold the tractor, with a brand new SideWinder 5x5 rotary mower attached, in Clark County, IN and never saw that one again.

I dont think a 240 came with 3 point hitch. they would have had 2 point hitch. You may be able to buy a after market hitch but they are high.

You can, just need to get lucky and find one. I have been looking for almost a year and the best thing I can find is about 3,000 miles away. Not to mention they want between $400-$1,000 for them.
