While it's common to put grease in the steering gears, I would never do that in the transmission as the situation is entirely different. The transmissions have oil channels for the oil to flow through the bearings. The gears sling the oil up into the channels and then it flows by gravity through the channels to the bearings and back down to the sump. If there is only gease in there, the bearings may not get proper lubrication and cooling. This would be especially true under heavy load. All that said, seems like the bearings in the transmissions of these old tractors last forever in spite of a lot of abuse. I overhauled a Super H transmission a few years ago and I replaced several bearings due to wear. The oil flow channels were all blocked up with sludge and I think the bearings wore due to inadequate cirulation of the oil.

Old gear oil will seem like grease. I've drained it out of several older tractors... Personally, I drain and fill with diesel fuel, drive around the yard for a while, and drain.

On my F12, we had to pull the cover off and scrape the goo out...

goerge is right on. about the only thing i would think about using grease in (besides the locations calling for grease), is maybe the steering box since there is alot less movement then in like a transmission.

Sometimes when seals go to leaking instead of fixing them some folks fill various things including tractor rear ends with grease to slow down leaks. I dont recommend it. However I do use it in my bushhog gear boxes for the same reason.
