I have too much play in the steering wheel on my H project. Maybe 3/4 turn before I get any action. Any suggestions as to a fix on this.

more then likely it is the worm gear. i would check that first. they get worn bad. onee way to tell if it is that is jack up the front and turn the whell to one side and see if it still sloppy. if is is solid and dosent have the play it had before you found your problime. have someone turn the wheel back and forth and hold you hand where it goes into mest the worm gear is it slops back and forth that is the problume. you may have more than one aera bad. one bad thing about narrow fronts.

follow the stearing rod and all the conrctions for play. my 43 shakes so bad on the hiway i shake in my sleep! 9-out of 10 times it is in the worm gear. When they were used in fields and hit a rock or anything else hard it would jam on the stearing and would even break a wrist or 2. Thus every time it got jammed it would cause play in the worm gear. on some of them you can spin it around 180` there not to bad to change and you will be glad you did. as there is nothing more fun then driving the ol H down the road! good luck. just follow the stearing rod and check for slop. then check the worm gear. you need to take the nose off to access it. hope this helps... good luck.

Several items Tom,
Each has some effect.
1}The Universal joint near the gauges in the hood need to be checked for slop both in the caps, and the cross. There is also a good chance that the keyways on the shafts may be loose.
2}The sector and worm in the gear box on top of the bolster may be loose/worn. Watch the shaft where it enters the box to see if it seems to move in and out when turning the wheel within the play. If it does, that play needs to be adjused out, With shims under the bearings, or adjustment of the plug in the very front of the box. New bearings may be needed.
3}The sector may be worn. Some are full circle gears and can be flipped over to get a new spot for wear. Others are half gears and cannot be flipped. if worn. NOS, or good used are needed. (there was a thread several months back about rbuilt gears).
4}Bolster bearings and bushings can make hard and sloppy steering. disassembling the front shaft from thhe boldter is simple, but requires jacking and support. I hope this helped. JimN

Tom, my M was the same way so I opened the sector gear box and the entire bolster shaft was moving formard about a quarter inch when the wheel was turned. The bushing bearings in the bolster were worn clear thru into the casting. Some new bushings corrected the problem along with turning the sector gear 180. Henry
