After replacing virtually the entire electrical system piece by piece to try and solve a lack of power problem, we found that the cam lobes on the distributor were worn in such a fashion that when the points were adjusted properly on two lobes (opposite from each other) the points didn't even open on the other two lobes. We have split the difference so they open some on each lobe and it runs. My question is can these lobes be replaced? The shaft does not seem to have much lateral play. Should I just get a rebuilt unit? I have as much money in trying to fix this (including a rebuilt head) as I paid for the tractor 30 years ago but I would like to keep it since I have the implements for it too. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I will add to the other info that in my experience, the shaft and bushings may be causing as much of the difficulty as the lobes themselves. The drive housing has a plug for a grease fitting, but it is sometimes never greased. As the shaft wears the bushings go letting the cam wobble. Try moving the shaft sideways, up and down, in and out. if you can see it move at all, it will drastically change the point setting during operation. Bushings can be purchased from Motion industries that are twice as long as the old one they then run on a new part of the shaft, and are a good fix. JimN

You can probably find one at any farm tractor salvage yard. Hal
PS: Try this website: www.epartdirect.com/
The A's, B's and C's use the same distributor.

The case/IH online parts catalog shows the cam to be an available part.
