Magneto -v- coil and distributor

I have decided to take to coil and distributor off my H and put a magneto on there. To install it, it looks like a no brainer to me but???? I have set #1 to TDC and have pointed the rotor button to #1 cylinder and the other 3 in proper firing order. There are only 2 ways the distributor can slide in the slot 180 degrees from each other, and to me, it does not seem to make a difference as long as I get the rotor pointed in the right directon?

Are there any secrets here that I am not seeing?

If I had a battery powered coil distributor ignition I wouldnt replace it with a magneto.

1) The slower a mag turns the less its spark energy while the coil ignition still produces relatively high energy at idle (or hard lugged down RPM) as well as high RPM i.e. its NOT RPM dependant for its energy, it gets it from the storage battery. At low hard lugging RPM when you need a good strong spark the most is when the mags spark energy (notwithstanding the impulse starting spark) is low, but the coil still has high spark energy when the engine is lugged down.

2) The Mag HAS ONLY TWO TIMINGS its start/impulse and its advance/run timing while the distributor has a variable advance curve that is based on engine RPM i.e. it advances the timing as RPM increases gradually.

3) The Coil ignition can be a bit more forgiving of off timign or imperfect points versus the mag which has to be pretty well right for good starting and performance.

4) Of course, the Mag has the advantage of not needing any battery power so it can still start a tractor with a weak battery or even a hand cranker.

Hey Tom,
How's the little LB coming? I took factory distributor off my '49 H and put a good, HOT mag on it. Ran it a few days, took good, hot mag back off and put distributor back on. More horsies, better idling. At least on mine. I do seem to remember having to remove the piece that the mag or distributor mounts to and turning the gear to set timing for mag.

I would use the distributor for two reasons. The first is that it has more total response to engine needs at various speeds, adjusting the timing with a centrifugal advance. The second is that in my opinion they idle smoother with retarded timing (allowed by the centrifugal advance).

The mag setup must allow for the impulse coupling action. There are several descriptions of it in the archives. Mag timing placed in the search for box will get you there. There are important elements to setting the coupling. I reread the info every time I do it. JimN

The mad needs to be timed a little bit sooner then the coil set up. They got rid of the mags because the coils gave a more reliable spark and you could advance the timing a bit thus giving you more horses. there should two timing marks on the fly whell that are right next to each other.. use the second one for mag and the first one for coil. the two notches will be right next to each other. i like to use a timing light but you dont have to as you can set them by ear. if you are gonna be hand cranking it make sure not to advance it like its a old chevy as you can get your arm broke! Good luck. Oh ya make sure the no 1 piston is on the compression stroke when timing the mag. You can put your thum over the 1 plug hole and when you feel outword pressure thats the compression stoke. then use the second notch of the two right next to each other. If you don't check for compression stroke you could be 180` off. good lick

Install the mag as you said, rotate it towards the block, then away from the block until it snaps. The timming will be just right then. That's the way I set mine and I have no problems with kick back when I hand crank it.
