I painted the generator, installed it and was putting the voltage regulator on it. One of the screws slipped out of my hand and down into the push rod gallery it went. I can see it down in there. Hovefully, I can get a magnet slinder enough to slide down in there and get out out, otherwise, It looks like I will have to do considerable effort to take the side cover off and get it out. (I had not put the valve cover on)

Tomorrow is another day.

Farmer Bob's idea is a good one and I have done that many times in the past. I have also used a slender screwdriver that I magntized. Incase you have never magnatized anything, just get a good strong magnet like one from a car stereo speaker and rub the metal along side of magnet. rub one direction only and remove the metal after every stroke. check the strenght by picking up another nut the same size or bigger. To demagnatize the screw driver just slam it down on something hard a few times kind of like beating a drum with a drumstick.

Just magnetize the last 6" of a metal coat hanger after straightening it out and stick it down the hole. Have used that trick many times when a regular flex store bought magnet was too large. G'luck

I have one of those slender magnets that's about 32" long and 1/4" in diameter. Your local auto part store probably has them. Sure has been handy. Hal

that sucks! a thought i had bad luck when i fell asleep with my laptop last night i woke up this morning and 5 of my keys were missing off the key board! i had to find ALL the clips AND ALL the keys!!!! It took me around an hour to find all the pieces and another hour and a half figuring out how the hell they went back toghether again! i guess that why they say $hit happens! I never have put a generator on before with out having the valve cover on. it is hard enough to get the cover on and off with eveything clear! i dont even know if i could get the cover on with my alternator on. you should be able to get it. good luck. where there is a WILL there IS a WAY!
