I broke the transmission countershaft pulling my 1940 M today. It looks like I need to split the tractor between the tranny and the clutch/bell housing. Any other tips, things to do/not do? Thanks for the help.?

Bob's right - you can take out everything from the clutch to the pto without splitting it. A manual (the IH Service Manual you can get from this website will give fairly good instructions) would be a big help, but if you need to get started before it gets there let us know, we've got answers. Often two diametric answers to the same question, but answers nonetheless. Good luck, Wm
PS - If I can do it, anybody can.

I don't think you have to split it, but you will need to pull the top cover off. You can get to everything to start with from inside the belly pump hole, then you can take out the trans pieces from the top. Hope the breakage is minimal!
