Farmall M governor question

For all of the years that I remember my grandfather and my dad using the '52 Farmall M tractor (that I now am restoring) only one thing bothered me about it: as you moved the throttle lever the tractor RPMs would not go up until after a significant turn. In other words, the tractor would remain idling until you moved the throttle of approximately 30+ degrees and then the engine would rev. up.

Is there a manual that shows how to repair a governor or tell how it works? Perhaps it is a simple fix. Is it most likely a worn spring? I plan to take it apart and investigate. Is there a special lubricant for these devises?

On many of these tractors you will find that the link between the throttle and governor, under the hood is worn out and very sloppy which contributes to the excessive throttle movement before any action at the governor.

Just finished replacing my gov and there is a lot to learn. First, check all the linkage on top of the tractor where the throttle is connected to the gov rod that pushes down on the cgov lever, Thosse springs up above cna wear etc. and throw the throttling out of kilter. Took me a while to adjust all that linkage. If the tractor is that old look to see if the weights in the gov are sloppy. Mine moved all over and the carrier needed replacin.

That happens on mine as well and I have a heavy duty spring in the gov. The rpm won't come up until the spring extends past a certain.

I&T shop manual number IH-8. It will have adjustment procedures in it. You can order them on line. Maybe on this site. Look to the left of your screen and click on tractor manuals.
