Many of the chassis parts are the same on the M and the MD. I believe most everything from the engine back is the same except for fuel system parts, throttle linkages and electrical. All MDs were originally 12 volt electrical. So yes, I think you could swap the rear ends. The MD does have a slightly longer wheelbase than the M, due to the engine being longer. That means the side support rails are longer on the MD and will not work on an M. Why don't you just fix up your MD??? Sounded like it was just a problem with the timing gears which should not be too hard to deal with. If it ran good on diesel I think it would be worth the effort to get into fixing it.

The only difference I know of is that the MD had a small device to hold the clutch pedal disengaged. The gas models did not have this. My only guess is that if you let the engine idle for long periods, you would not want the belly pump to turn. Other than that, I think they are identical.

It is not really to bad of a job. I have changed several crashed run away H & M's. Also I have an M 9 speed gasoline tractor that needs a little TLC for $1000.

M,and MD should all be the same except for engine parts. Why do you want to go thru all that work? Sounds like you got too much time on your hands. Get the MD manual, Fix the MD, If you want a 9 speed m, sell the one you have now and get one. Doug

Time is all any of us really have..... .i was just thinking that it would be a good learning experiance plus i think all the parts i would have left over would be worth as much as the tractor. I know the parts on the MD's are very pricy. plus if i part it out i could help save other md's from the same fate. It was just one option i was pondering over.....I'm thinking of swapping the wide front of the M and putting it on the MD. now a MD with fact wide front thats a nice tractor, plus it would be the only one that i know of,that has a facvtory wide front.
