Is there a rule for how far the studs should be screwed in to the block? I turned them in until they started to get snug and that only allowed about 1/2 to 3/4 of a nuts worth of thread above the head when it was placed on top.

Thanks!

Mark D.

Just had the same problem with my H. When I took the head off most of them were up 3-4 threads above the deck. My problem may be a little different though. I figured in the end that my engine was originally distillate and they changed the head to gas, which I belive is 1/2 taller head, but used the same studs. I ended up buying all the longer size studs, like the two long ones that the throttle linkage sits on, for all of them. But I think you can get away with leaving them up a few threads. I know I've read that a lot of people have had to. Can't understand why this is such a common problem???

You definiately need the nuts full of threads to get the proper torque values. I was wondering if they slop around in the holes if you back them out some--because they need to be backed out.

I think they will still be solid backed out about a 1/4 of a inch they just won't be as tight.

I think I'll throw some blue loctite on them and not put them in as far. After I torque down the nuts they should be secure. They are all original parts so they must never have been bottomed out before.

Mark, I would back them out a little. You need a full nut on the head end.
