I am goign to go look at a 400 diesel and im not sure what to look for. I am told that it does run but is not being used anymore and the guy wants to get rid of it now. So I know the usual things to look at are the TA, tires, tin. But I dont know much about diesel is there a way i can tell if the engine is good. I know alot about gas ones but when it comes to these I dont know a whole lot. From what iv read they are expensive to rebuild and so forth when compared to a gas version. My other guestion is what is a fair price for one of these? if it does run and the tires are useable and all right tin? I havent a clue where to start.

Thanks very much

Andrew

I have a 400D. It's a fun tractor and will drag 3 16's no problem. Mine has developed the leaking fuel injector pump you described. (I don't use it enough). How bad are the seals to install for a novice?

Andrew, make sure it starts well and switches over to diesel easy. A good engine will only smoke much when it is loaded and then it should be black fuel smoke. White smoke may indicate a bad injector or two. Check for water in oil. They are a little pricey to work on. Complete ovrhaul kit with sleeves and pistons will run over 2000 bucks. This is not counting head and or machine work, which could be pricey as well. Look for fuel leaks at the injection pump as if it has sit long the pump may need some seals in it. I have seen them bring as little as 500 dollars and up to the 3000 dollar range for a good one with good tires. power steering is something to consider as well. These are not the easiest steering tractors without it. They are in 45 to 50 HP range. I think around 52 PTO and 48 drawbar. That is close. They are good pulling, tough old tractors. Will handle 3X16 plow in most places and mabe 4X14 in some places. Burn a lot less fuel than the gas version.
