Hi, you all know tractors very well so Im hoping you can help a new comer out. We bought a nice International Harvester 2500 constructal that needs some TLC but is in sound condition otherwise (not counting a bad 2nd gear). Its a diesel 4 cylinder with 4 speed transmision. Has front end loader and backhoe. I think it was a good deal at $4450. We are replacing all hydraulic hoses since it was outside last 2 years (it WILL be kept in shed from now on). We are draining oil changing filters and hydro oil aswell.

The question. IS this a combo system where the hydro is also the tran fluid. If so what would you recomend to use in it. I have the service and parts manual but doesnt really say! Exact year not known but told was pre-80's. Probably late 70's. I can get the numbers off tractor if instructed where to look for them. I "think" its a shuttle shifter since a lever is used to go from forward to backward??? Another lever moves hydro power from power steering to the back-hoe waist hydro's.

Ive wanted a real tractor since I was a kid and now at near 30 I finally got one. Found your great site and hope to learn as much as I can from you. Ive built many car and truck motors so I know how to turn a wrench and do some machining and welding. Just..... well this stuff here is all new to me. So Im not going to assume I know anything (since I dont) Please help me and any tips will also be very appreciated.

Thanks, John-Paul

I also have a 2500. I wish I could help you on the tranny fluid I have had mine a bit and was told and have been using transdraulic fluid since I got the machine, it was not the service dealer that told me this. I have not had any problems with it but I am not recommending it because I don't know what the right stuff to use is. if you need any help with anything and I can be of assistance let me know. bmartin3@localnet.com
good luck

Hi John-Paul, I believe but not 100% certain 2500B is same as the agricultural 574 with a German built D239 engine. If you search CIH web site for manuals you will find:Manual TC-138 574 And 2500 Tractor. Not sure difference between 2500A and 2500B.
The 574 hydraulics was a combined transmission and hydraulic reservoir. The proper hydraulic oil to use in 574 is CASEIH Hytran or equivalent.

574 was build in Doncaster UK with German build D239 engine. Some units were shipped to USA and assembled there. USA units had Delco Remy electrical system and UK had Lucas electric systems. Transmission/Rear end was common to 454,484,495,464,574,584,674,684,695,784,884 and some 30XX series. D239 was used in 574,674,684,695,544 and others.

Hope this helps
JimB

John. I do not know what oil you need, but if you plan on keeping this tractor you might want to think about getting a owner, service, and parts manual. Binder Books has the best one around. Good turn around time. Morgan
