On most 4 terminal Voltage Regulators the unlabeled terminal off on one side or the bottom all by itself is the ARM/GEN while the three side by side are BAT FLD LOAD, they wire: BAT on VR to load (NOT batery/starter) side of ammeter. Thats the same wire that connected to the BAT side of a 2 wire cutout relay. FLD on VR to gennys Field post ARM/GEN on VR to gennys ARM post LOAD on VR supplies hot battery voltage to loads like lights n ignition usually via a wire from there to the switches BAT input terminals. On a 3 wire VR or the old cutout relay those same loads were served from the load terminal on the VR (and will still work there) but on a 4 terminal VR they are fed from the VR's L terminal instead. Of course, you no longer run any wire from the gennys Field post up to the light switch. Hook er up n polarize the genny n let er hapn capn If its a 3 brush genny I would set the 3rd adjustable brush over closer to the max charge location if I switched form a cutout relay to a VR John T
