Hydraulic fluid level and maintenance for 140

You'll probably swear a bit at that steering box, they were poor design and most leaked by the time they were 5 years old. I've had moly grease in my SA and 130 for 25 years now, just pumped the 140 steering box full of grease about a month ago. I just put a grease zerk in the drain plug and pump in grease until it comes out the fill plug. Takes about 3-4 tubes of grease for the initial fill up and after that I put in about 6 pumps every time I grease the front end. It's the best way I know to stop that oil from dripping on axle and collecting dust. Some folks call it John Deere Corn head grease, but that is nothing more than moly grease. You have to fill it at first, then what you add is forced to gears.

If I were in the market for 140 manuals, I'd go to Binder Books give them your serial number, and get the right one. It may be Binder only publish the final one with all upgrades these days.

At the bottom left of the touch control unit, is a cover held in place by 4 small bolts. About 3" kind of rounded square. Behind that cover is a cylinder type screen, designed to stop dirt from going to the pump on the suction side. That screen must be cleaned regularly. You will loose a bit of oil when you remove the screen.

Always use Hy tran or it's equivilant in the hydraulic system. If your disk is a 20 blade tandem that is just about the load limit of that hitch, and yes it will make the front end light. Since you are asking these questions, you must not have a manual. You should have an IH operator's manual at least. I can assure you that without a manual you have other lubrication points going unserviced.
