Hi Michael, is it gas or 3 cyl Diesel?
Sitting on the seat:
Left hand:
1)Speed transmission 1 thru 4.
2)Range transmission Lo,Hi and Rev.
3)Left heel, Parking brake (always make sure parking brake is OFF before driving tractor or it will chew up the parking brake band inside the transmission and clog the hydraulic lines and filter). There is an idiot light on the dash that indicates parking brake is on but usually lamp is burnt out.
4)Dip stick at left foot is transmission/hydraulic fluid level.
Right hand:
1)Inside level is draft control and should be all the way forward unless using 3pt plow or cultivator.
2)Outside level is 3pt raise/lower lever.
3)Behind 3pt levers is the IPTO engage/disengage level.
4)Behind right heel is remote hydraulic control level.
5)Foot pedal at heel is differential lock.
On dash right lever is throttle and if it has left lever then T/A or Fwd/Rev.

Re cylinder head removal, buy a shop manual.

Hope this helps
JimB

The two on the left at top are gear shift levers, one has four speeds and the other is high and low range and reverse. The tractor will have 8 forward and 4 reverse gears on it. The one below that is parking brake. On the right side one on the top is for the independent PTO and one is for response time for the 3 point hitch. The two below that are for the 3 point lift. One lift and the other sets the amount of draft on it. The one or two at the bottom work the hydraulic outlet or outlets at the rear of tractor. There is one at the floor board that engages the differential lock, it has a foot pedal on it. The one to the right of steering wheel is the throttle lever. I don't know if any 484's had TA or not, but it would be on the left side of steering wheel if it has TA.

It doesnt have a TA but there is a hole in the dash so maybe it was a option. You described it very well, thanks alot. Im a JD guy so Im new to the IH world.

I suspect the TA was an option, but don't know for sure. Dad bought one new in 81 and it has been a great little tractor. Easy on fuel too. It is a little hard to start in cold weather, but other than that it is a good one. They have a good strong lift and are real manuverable in tight spots. Pull pretty good too for a little tractor. We have put 5000 hours on his and nothing has ever gone wrong with it except for the typical brake trouble on these.

I think there is a hole in a piston in reply to georgeky, 07-02-2007 09:30:14
The guy I got it from said it made a loud noise and smoke blew out the crank case breather and knocked after that. I think there is a hole in a piston which is why I want to pull the head off. I smelled the oil, I figured it would have diesel in it but I couldnt really tell.
