Farmall H carb float needle valve question???

I wasn't having luck with the IH rubber tip float needle valve in my Farmall H. At the same time, I have a Kohler rubber tipped needle in my IH 154 and it doesn't leak a drop so go figure. The H carb kept leaking so I tried an old steel tipped needle and it isn't leaking so far. I took valve lapping compound and lapped the needle and seat using a cordless drill with the seat held by a socket hooked to the drill. My needle wasn't the best to start with so I was wondering where can I get a new steel tipped needle? thanks!!

Does anyone know the Kroler part number for the needle and seat that would fit the H? I have a number for the Cub and that Kroler part stopped a leak that I had been tinkering with for 2 years. The Kroler needle and seat on my Cub have a low bevel angle, and looking at it side by side with an IH setup (not very scientific I know) it appears that the Kroler parts have a bigger area of contact.

cleanlisess is Next to godliness on these old carbs..... I only have one H that will leak if left off for more then 3 min. So I always shut off the gas even on my tractors that work fine. Remember when grand dad had to use horses he had to take time to feed the horse and get it ready to go out into the field, these old tractors have nothing to prove..... just take the 3 seconds it takes and shut off the gas, its that easy....ya it does suck when you get on the tractor and you forget to turn the gas back on... especally if your fat like me. but i guess getting off the tractor to turn on the gas on isent that bad. but clean the heck out of the float valve and remeber it just takes somthing you cant see to screw it up. A person can drop the valve and get it dirty. take your time and do it wright it will save you time in the end....

john, i fought my h for quite a while, it was a leaker. changed the needle and seat a number of times, reset the float level a bunch. put it back to gether, start it, shut it off, leaked again. you could raise the float with the bowl off and the gas would stop. drove me crazy. finally found 2 problems, 1st the bowl gasket hung in the bowl a little too much and would hit the float keeping it open. then, found the float was a little crooked and would catch the side of the bowl. works good now.

NOS is your only option. You can't buy anything but the rubber-tip needles anymore. Sucks.

I'm having issues with mine sticking closed. I tried the "seat" trick by tapping the needle into the seat with a hammer. It worked for two days, then started sticking again. After about 2 minutes of idling, I have to tap the carburetor with a rock, hammer, piece of pipe, etc. or the tractor quits...

Nat, that seating trick is an old wives tale. It will serve no purpose other than to destroy an otherwise functional needle and seat. The trick I have learned is to thoroughly clean both the needle and the seat with spray can carb cleaner. Spray them down real good, to the point of being wasteful with the cleaner, and then blow dry with compressed air. Do this with a brand new assembly as well as the used ones. My theory is that there is some residue left from the manufacturing process. This residue then becomes sticky when it encounters gasoline. Get rid of the residue first, and you won't have any problems.

I've been searching for steel tipped needles for several years now and have had no luck at all. The viton tipped (rubber) needles do work very well but they have to be clean, clean, clean.
