Still getting familiar with my new M, thanks to all who have helped thus far. I checked the differential fluid as some suggested. Removed the check plug, put my finger in and could feel nothing. I also got an owners manual as was suggested and it says 13 gallon capacity? Does this sound right or am I misreading something? My father just replaced the axle in his C and used 5 gallons to fill. What a difference!

Thank you all for the info and advice. 13 gallons of differential fluid is gonna make a dent in my pocket. It sounds worth it though.

Change the differential/transmission fluid, it is old and contaminated. It probably has not been changed in years, maybe decades. Also if you take it apart, and it has not been run in a while, don't be surprised if the bull gears are pitted from sitting in water. A lot of the water can be condensation, from lack of use and maintenance, not necessarily from rain. If it has been used regularly, it will be in far better condition.

Not necceraly contaminated with water. Most people in the midwest shed there tractors. Unless it has sat out side for a long long time or never under a roof you then change it. anither trick is to let it sit for a week to 10 days and then take out the drain plug..... water should come out first. most of the water comes in from the where the shifter meets the cover. plus the top bolts that hold the cover on can leak water in the rearend. I always shed my tractors even if they dont run! Plus i alway start and run my tractors at least once a month. and if it is a once a month starting tractor i like to drain the tank by driving it around and putting in fresh gas at least evry 6 month. if im gonna let a engine sit for more than a few months and it runs i will take and drown the cylinders in oil as well as the carb. I do this on my generator that i use rarley. Since i did this i havent had any carb related problumes. i do recomend taking out the plug(s) and blowing out the excess oil to aid in starting. I know where there are three tractors that could still be good if this would of been done to them. Fill em up to the top with used oil if nothing else...its better then water. But people don;t think there gonna sit that long and a week turns into a month and months into years. then you go back to it only to have found it to be stuck. That must be a crappy feeling to find your engine stuck.

13 gal is correct. I expect your best bet would be to drain all the old stuff out and replace it. If it hasn"t been changed in a while, what is in there is probably contaminated with water. Good luck. Larry
