I just got back from paying the fuel man. I still am feeling the sting.....I got 375 gals of lp and 300 gals of 90 octaine shell gasoline. it came to $1295.22 (1.395 a gal for propaine 2.692 a gal for 90 oct gasoline.) Minnesota gas includes fed tax. I could of bought me a nice tractor with that kind of money.... I cant belive a fill up is worth more than some of my tractors.... Back when i was a kid in 1990-95 i think the most pops paid for farm gas was 1.09 and was mostly 80-90 cents. I just cant get over how much fuel is now.

Man where are you getting propane for $1.39!! The last two years, I've been paying over $2 for the propane to heat my shop. Others talk about the prices of old. We had an MD years ago and I can recall my Dad being really upset when they raised the price of diesel from 8 cents to 10 cents a gallon. I think that was around 1950. I think gasoline was around 18 cents at the time. It must have cost all of $20 to fill our 250 gallon diesel tank, which was probably enough to last all summer.

Yes, you could have bought a tractor, but remember that a tractor needs lots of fuel.

I don't know what a bulk delivery is for price per gallon out here, but at the pump on base for my car I pay $3.09 a gallon. So $2.69 would be a blessing.

The first bulk fuel I bought would have been in 1968. 11 cents per gallon for un-taxed diesel. It was abouot 1/3 the cost of taxed gasoline.

Johnnny: Try to get over it if you can. As they say, don't worry over things you cannot change; worry about the things you CAN change. In 1965, a semi-skilled entry level job paid $1.25 an hour. Gas was $.32 a gallon. Today, that same job pays about $12.50 and gas is $3.20 a gallon. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

THanks Richwill, I think the rubber parts are the same for f-12 and H. My new rubber and retainers are at the IH dealer right now with the new constant mesh gear. I ordered new bolts today (OUUCH!) and they will come in fri hopefully. I need to check the bolts from H to F-12 as the 12 needs them too. We were really spoiled on gas price 7-8 years ago. remeber when it got down to .89 cents for a week or so?

Clutch shaft coupler plate in reply to Bob Kerr, 07-03-2007 20:02:53
Hey Bob,

Heard someone talking to you about this. It's about the last thing I have to do, connecting clucth shaft to trans shaft in the rear of the torque tube. I don't have enough room for that funny looking piece to fit in with the bolts and rubber washers. The shaft slides in and out of the clutch easily and seems to be all the way forward, but still can't get enough room. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

I will have to think here for a min, It is late now and am getting tired, but here goes. I think I had gotten the shaft slid in and had trouble like that also, so I took off the bolt for the trans input shaft and got the shaft on all the way ( I think it may have not gone all the way into the pilot bearing)then put the bolt back in and then slid the ring inbetween the flanges and then slid in the rubber washers with retaniers. I will have to tell you, the manuals are not much help for this, I plan on taking mine back apart tomorrow if the rain lets up and the puddle under the tractor isn't too deep, I may write down the process so I can help everyone out. Where in Indiana are you?

When I was a kid Dad had a gas station and I remember he sold regular for.32 cents. I was told later he was high priced as in Indy gas was selling for 25-28 cents, but he did mostly service work on busses and fire trucks for the township. I remember the cow pasture in summer being FULL of busses from 2 different townships to get ready for the next school year. When it came for me to go to school, riding the bus was old hat and I wanted to walk to school! The fire trucks were the fun ones anyway and I got to ride those on test drives as well. When I was in high school I helped Dad do tune ups on the gas trucks which was fun. He closed his shop by then and still did the fire trucks in our driveway at the house. That would shake up the neigbors when they saw fire trucks in our driveway they would stand in front of the house gawking like the house was on fire or something! Yeah prices really su@$. I could have bought 2 tractors for what I have in bearings in one, but oh well it will be like new.

i did the math..... min wage v.s. gas was better then it is now....now you have to work longer to get the same amount. min wage is leta say 6 bucks even though its not that on a farm for a student. they get around 4.20 an hour and have to pay social serity at 7.65 percent. but gas at 2.99 gal you only get 2 gallons on min wage per hour now adays. so back then was better per hour per gallon. when i milked i got 4.10 an hour and i think he now pays 4.80 an hour. back when i worked gas was 1.10 a gal so i would get about 3.8 gallon per hour in wages...today you get less gallons per hour then you did when the gas was 16. or 18 cents per gallon , when you got 75 cents a hour for gas. thats 4 gallons per hour v.s. today it is less then 2 gallons a hour, it hit 3.39 here in south east mn.

What's your point? Who works for minimum wage today? Nobody, that's who. It's an irrelevant standard today. mike

If you check, average wage then to now you'll find gas is very nearly the same percentage as it was then.
