My 2404 seeps a small amount of Hydraulic fluid from under the transmission cover while running. The shop manual dos not mention any gasket used under the cover. The cover has the gear shift extending through it. I don't know if it ever had a gasket. I am wondering if I could use some kind of gasket maker to stop the leak? I doubt that it is overfull. The instructions are to fill it to the top. The plug to fill it is also on top of the cover. Any advice will be welcome.

Ignore my comment on filling it to the top. It is filled to the level of the plug on the side. I checked the fluid level. it took a small amount to fill it to the plug. My only concern was that I have just painted the tractor so this small leak was bugging me. Thanks again for the advice.

The plug looks like it has been in there a long time. There are no set screws above the PTO as that is where the 3 pt hitch is. Thanks for the tip on the gasket maker.
You are right about the location because its been so long since I have checked mine.

If memory serves me right on my 404 it did not have a cover gasket and I used a very thin strip of gasket maker around the mating serfices.

I cut the tip so it only put out a line like the size of a ballpoint pin insert.

Worked for me.

The hydraulic check point should be above the pto and is two alen screws.

My 404 is the industrial/low version.
