I have a 400 engine torn apart. It has 4.125 inch pistons(281). The crank is at a shop to be grounded and I now need to order new rings. The end gap on the old rings were about .190. What information do I need to have, to order the new rings? The piston has a number GE-300X, there are 4 rings.
IH dealer would need $135 for a set and he asked if they were aluminum or gray cast pistons. Aren't they all aluminum?
Where should I order them from, a dealer, or on-line?
Thank you SDE

I would put a sleeve kit in it while you have it torn down. The old sleeves are probably worn. Hal

If you go with a set of rings from the dealer you will probably get cast oil control rings. They work well when the sleeves are in good shape and give good service life. When I put rings into engines with used sleeves and pistons I perfer steel oil control rings which you will get from aftermarket suppliers. They seem to offer better oil control on less than perfect bores.

Let the machine shop order you a new engine kit, you are going to need bearings, etc, anyway. If it is a reputable shop, they will know exactly what to do.

NO! All pistons are not aluminum. Aluminum pistons can be added to get more compression. They will need to know if you have cast iron or aluminum pistons. Stick a GOOD magnet on the pistons and if it sticks, they are cast, if it does not, they are aluminum. I think CASE IH or a parts store would be the best place to get new rings.

When the parts man asked about the pistons being gray iron, I asked him if he meant cast iron? I then said "they would be kind of heavy wouldn't they?" The computer was not being good to him and we got side-tracked, and he did not say much about it.
The pistons are aluminum. He did say that I could probably get the machine shop to order the rings for me as well as the bearings for the crank. He then looked around to see if any one heard him say that. I'll check with the parts store tomorrow.
Thank You Andy
