A weak TA means the torque amplifier is going bad. The 400 had a mechanical TA that used a ramp and roller system to keep the tractor from freewheeling or rolling faster on an incline. The TA gives you a high and low side and if the ta goes out you will normally lose the ta side and still run in direct drive.

Kevin: The point being, there is no such thing as a weak TA. They are either working good or they have slipped, and once slip the first time they are toast.

Belive me, my farm operation put a total of 75,000 hours on TA equipped tractors. I've talked with countless other farmers, all agree there is no such thing as a weak TA. It either works good or it's toast. Thus if anyone is advertising a tractor with a weak TA, you know damn well it's shot.

Heyseed: I think a weak TA must be much like a broken zipper on the fly of your trousers, Or a broken oak toilet seat that pinches your backside every time you sit on it. Plain and simple they are all toast.

I personally only ever had one TA go and worked perfect until one day it slipped in low range. I've had countless other farmers tell the same experience. Once they slip it's game over and time for a rebuild.

I've never been able to comprehend the term weak as in TA, they don't heal on their own. Must be a polite way of telling you it's toast.

Low range of Torque Amplifier not working correctly. Upper range/direct drive still works when low range goes out IHC TA. Repairs relatively basic, parts not expensive as compared to JD, does involve some dis-assembly and labor, adjustment checking. Known wear point and subject to abuse device. RN

Most likely that it is slipping.
