How's the tobacco crop up your way. It has been very dry here, but it is surviving. Many have poor stands in red land. It is about 2 weeks behind in most places and uneven. It is growing so slow that keeping worms from eating it up is becoming a problem. It needs a ground soaker, stalk buster rain to put it in top and get the nitrogen out of the soil so it will ripen. Burley production has dropped off here this year because many flue-cured growers find it takes more labor than the flue-cured and yields have not been as high as anticipated. Here's wishing you and your crops well.

Hi Jim, for the most part tobacco looks pretty good around here. There is a crop or two that is in bad shape, but it is mostly from neglect of the cultivator. We had over 3 inches a few nights ago and some in low spots it has scalded down. I have been plowing since daylight, but has gotten to hot for me now, so I am done for the day. The Super C wanted to lay around anyhow. Lots of it is behind here too. Mine is right on track, I always set mine a little later than most folks nowdays do. I still raise my plants the old fashion way in beds. There has been 2 or 3 of the locals that had started irrigating before the big rain. I will never water any again, I sold my outfit 10 years. Good luck down that way.

Do you chew any of your tobacco? My late dad did and he always chewed when milking. He would drag out the pipe when he was washing the milkers and cans.
We could use some of that rain here. They've been getting rains in SE PA. They seem to bypass MD. Hal

Hi Hal. No I don't chew much. I have from time to time and prefer it straight from the barn when I do. The pouch tobacco is to sweet for me. I use to save some of the best lug leaves for a neighbor who made his own twist. Lots of folks use to chew it. We hadn't had any rain for several weeks until the other night and we got a good one. Lots of wind as well. It tore down lots of trees in Lexington about 40 miles from me. You will get some sooner or later, just have to hope the later isn't to late.
