I have a "58 Farmall Cub with a very tired engine, that needs rebuilding more than just rings and bearings. I was going to see about a rebore and overhaul, then after installing a new radiator last weekend disaster struck. One of the ears that the fan mounts to broke off sending the fan through the new radiator. After talking to my brother, he suggested repowering with a Kubota diesel engine. Anyone ever done this before? Asbestos underwear in place for purists.

that would be a challenging project. the cub bolster mounts to the front of the engine, so you'd need to do quite a bit of fabrication. it would be a lot cheaper and quicker to pick up another cub motor.

PTO is reverse direction, not the engine.

pto on a cub is direct connected to the engine so it turns the same rpm and the same direction

David: I think you'll fine that Cub engine turns backwards to most other engines, built in the past 75 years.

gene: Thankyou for that, I knew the Cub pto turned backwards, compared to most tractors. Probably close to 50 years since I've even been around a Cub, thus I'd forgotten that one.

If you are looking for an opiniion regarding "hacking" the Cub with a Kubota Engine I think you need to look elsewhere.

Hmm...glad he had on them asbestos underwear before you fired that salvo.

It's his tractor and if he wants a Cadillac engine in it...it's his business and no call for a smart a$$ comment.

I think if the machine is all that tired...he might be better off to sell it and find something in good running order. rebuilds extend the life of the machine, but rarely increase the value in ratio to the investment..unless the tractor in dead in the water. If the whole tractor is shabby, dump it and find a nice one...cheaper in the long run.
