IH 424 Hydraulic Fill Level - Dipstick anywhere?

I am curious on a 424 if there is a specific plug you are supposed to pull and then fill until it runs out there. Is there a hydraulic dipstick on the 424? I was planning to examine the screen on the hydraulic line and when I removed it, I took a major bath of hydraulic fluid. When I closed things back up, the hydraulics ran kinda jumpy. I pulled the plug on the rear top of the reservoir (right side) and filled it to the top - hydraulics work well now. Did I overfill it?

Thanks

Chris

Oh I forgot here is a cheap service manual ($10)
You can find the other two just search google.

IH 424 parts manual (give part number)

IH 424 Repair manual (gives tear down and rebuilds)

You need a service manual and a parts manual.

Parts will show the numbers of these items so you get right part. I just went through loops with napa to get right hytran filter. They got the oil filter Doooop. So I took the parts cat down and NOW they got the right one coming. LOL. So that is priceless. The diagrams help too!

Service manual will show where and what to check when. Like x many hours change or check this.

Repair manual is alike a chiltons car/truck book and show tear down and rebuild of entire unit.

Sounds like your is more like opur 2500. It has a oval shaped filter. Now it sit inbetween two metal shields (sandwitched) and on one is a hole. In that hole it has a micro metal filter, with a piece looks like inside of radiator cap right? IF so were looking at same thing basically.

That sprong only move IF the filter clogs. It then allows fluid to pass by filter and run through a metal micro filter instead bypassing the main one. Without this piece (or if spring stuck) it would literally suck a clogged filter into the pump unit. I assumed that was what it was for, and the napa guys agreed. If not someone will correct me Im sure heh. But it does make sense.

No there is no dipstick. Did you fill it to the top of the resevoir? It should be filled so it just touches the neck of the tube sitting inside the fill plug. Get all the trapped air out first and if it is too full it might go down. Next time you check the hydraulic filter a good thing is to check the two mesh screen filters. These are the suction filter in the reservoir and the small one in the draft control valve.

Thanks for your response. Is there a specific manual that will show where these are? The only thing I found was the filter on the front of the block under the seat (right side). I expected to find a screen but instead found a long pleated filter that looked in terrible shape. If anyone has a schematic showing where the screens are, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Chris
