That"s what the guy told me. Referring to his tractors. He can give them away to a good home, but he just can"t sell them. His name is Ira, and turns out he helped start IHC Chapter 14. He and his father bought the "42 H back in "54, and it"s been in his family ever since. He"d rather give it away to someone who will take care of it than sell it to someone who may scrap it. Which is why he"s offered it to me. He doesn"t care how long it takes to get it show ready, he just wants to drive it one last time. He said he"d probably have a tear in his eye when he does it. Anyway, he"s going to look it over this weekend and see if he can get it running with a small gas tank. He"s also going to look through a bunch of parts bins he has to see if there is anything it can use. He thinks he has some steel wheels for it, but I won"t use them. So, we"ll see what happens next. The saga continues.

Im from north east (PA) and that post confused the heck outta me. I mean the point you were getting at? Folks work hard for what they get everywhere, and there are freeloaders everywhere too!

Having said that I know what its like to want something so long you can taste it before you finally save that last $1 to buy it. My whole life has been like that. But you know what it makes you appreciate what you have all the more. I treat all my toys like treasures, carefully learning all about them and maintaining them like its the last Ill ever own.

That sounds a lot better, Mike. I hope it all works out for you that you get the H and that you don't get a divorce. mike

Mike, I remember vividly, my mom telling dad if he came home with another tractor that she was divorcing him. Within the month he bought two, one used and one new. That was 25 years ago and they are still together. He has since bought a couple more. My wife gave up on me as well. Tractors are my only hobby and it beats drinking.

Well, we're pushing 15 years of marriage now. I don't think a tractor will hurt that.

Accomodate some issues with your wife that will please her to no end (match your own socks, do with out being reminded Etc.) because she, and the kids will be compromising too. Do the hang the bikes thing. Make the space. Do it. JimN

I've already come up with a plan to get more of our stuff out of the way. I'll be sneaky about it. :)

Sneaky is a dangerous reality. Complicity with the other half is safe (and more powerful) JimN

WHO SAYS You can't sell your kids in reply to Mike CA, 07-10-2007 17:23:24
Ya know Mike, if you had come across the southern US border, you wouldn't have to be concerned about your kids health care or education expenses. US taxpayers would foot the bill, thus leaving you with $$'s to spend on a Farmall. Now if you were born up north in Hugh-Canada-land, things may have been different. Up-bringing there may have left you feeling you shouldn't 'jump the border', maybe you would feel responsible for your own actions, maybe you would feel the need to raise your family the 'old-fashioned way'. That is, spending $$'s and your time on and with them and also with your wife. Maybe you would feel you would have to acquire Farmalls the 'old-fashioned-stupid way' like Hugh, where you worked for them. I don't know if your kids are old enough to help with working on the tractor but maybe you can give them an old sock and have them wax it - bonding time with the kids. It would give the wife a chance for some time to herself or for her to be with other womenfolk or maybe develop an interest in red-iron. The gentleman sounds sincere in you getting the H, there is the added plus of an active local IH chapter for advice and camaraderie along with a chance for a mental escape from reality. Let the gentleman get back to you regarding his weekend findings. In the meantime, buy your pop by the 12 pack or case, not the individual can, make a list, don't just impulse buy at the grocery store and soon you will have enough $$'s saved for those new tires. I'm sure you will keep us posted.
