PTO speed

My books and manuals aren't near as specific about the PTO speed of 540 being no load or under load. And since my trusty dwell tach only grounds out my mag, I was thinking of using a mechanical tach on the PTO to check out/set up the governor on my BN.

So if my load on the engine shold be 1540 rpm to get a governed speed of 1400 under load, should I be aiming to get the PTO shaft turning at 594 (I'd settle for 595, really I would) with no load?

I really don't want to spring for an optical tach for no more often than I'd have any use for it, and a buddy of mine is confident that whatever his mechanical rig is will work pretty handily back at the PTO.

Thoughts?

An aside to Jim N, what Mfg. makes-made this strobe tach? Sounds like something that might come in handy. Thanks.

Could you get/ buy/borrow / find an extension for one of the Stewart Warner type hand-held tachs? you could go through the crank hole on the radiator cowling. Never saw one of these extensions, but there are a lot of tools I'm not familiar with.

The PTO gears of that tractor are 17 teeth driving 44 teeth. So that is your ratio between engine and PTO speeds. 1540 engine is 595 PTO and 1400 engine is 541 PTO.

That's what I was looking for, Jim. Thanks!

I haven't seen this tach yet, but I'll aim for 600 or a tick below.

Old is correct. The equipment you attach (designed for a rated load speed of 540 will handle anything a properly governed tractor will throw at it. If your governor is tweaked to higher speed (I would go with 5% over tag rated High Idle), then I would be cautious to limit my settings. JimN

I appreciate both your replies, but I'm thinking my question may not have been clear. I don't have any way of getting a tach onto the engine, and it's the engine speed I'm trying to check out.. I do have access to a tach that we can rig up to the PTO.

I agree about the 5% or so you mentioned, but the step up from loaded to no-load RPM is 10%. All the books are quite specific about the two engine speeds, but none of them say whether the 540 is load or no-load, they just say that's what the PTO is governed for.

If I set the governor so the PTO runs at 540, am I setting it up too low? Is 590 or 600 with no load more appropriate for what I'm trying to do?

I'm not worried so much about beating a sickle-bar to death as I am trying to get the rings to seat on a newly rebuilt engine and get the engine broke in.

It sounds good and runs evenly, but my ear isn't what it used to be, never mind the roar of a Farmall fan, and the fact that I am quite far down on the stop bolt on top of the governor, I think I may have it running more than a little fast, and this tach on the PTO seems like a way to check it out that suspicion and pull it down if I need to.

Again, many thanks!

The tach to borrow/rent is a strobe tach. It has a flashing Xenon lamp that acts like a timing light. It does not connect to the tractor at all. To use it, it is just directed toward the front pulley and a knob is rotated until the pulley appears stopped. Simple as watching TV with a remote. There will be a readout on the unit that is RPM. The rated speed is 540 under full rated load, not high idle. High Idle will be more (10% is a guess) But My 5% was goverened speed beyond rated High Idle (from tweeking the governor). Unless it has been tweeked, or is assembled incorrectly it is fine. By the way--- variable (up to 50% of engine power by the seat of your pants) losads at various RPMs above Idle for the first hour and a half, Then moderate to full to modest loads varying over time (dont measure the time, just do different things and don't let it idle fro long periods) for another 2 hrs, will get it ready to use. I would not do heavy tillage for 10 hours, but after that just use it. Change the oil at 15 hrs to a synthetic 10-40(best) or 10-40 car rated oil, or 15-40 diesel rated oil. Opinions will vary, but this is solid info from 45 years of watching oil improve. JimN

Yep. I've hunted all over the place for an optical tach and nobody has been able to come up with one, so I'll be goin' with plan B.

We're just gettin' the first cuttin' of hay off up here. That's worked out just ideally, as I've got about nine hours of rake time on her helpin' out a coupla the neighbors. A good, moderate variable load, with lots of opportunity to vary the speed, too.

Thanks!

Thats 540 RPM is a magic number. It can be from 500RPM to over 600 RPM and still be ok on almost all things. The 540 is a reference point for equipment not a hard fast rule
