Howdy, boys: The last couple of times I've bid on a SH governor on ebay, I've been "spanked" pretty badly. So, I looked up the part numbers for the governor assembly and they are the same for the above four models. I am reading that right, aren't I? Please reassure me that the governors are the same for these four tractors. If so, I'll just get one from an H or M. Thanks. mike durhan

I was wondering the same thing myself. My 41 H has an adjustment at the back of the govenor that appears to be a buffer screw. The 46 M I have has a cast boss in the same place,no screw.

Housings tapped for bumper spring and adjusting parts were mostly for power units to help with surging under light load. Do see those housings on tractors once in a while, usualy without a bumper spring inside.

Sure messing up today on my part Mike. Failed to mention below that external throttle levers are different between some models. Like if you wanted to use a 300 or 350 governor on a Farmall SH the control shaft from H,SH,M,SM,MTA would need to be used. W series governors used a arm like 100 and 50 series. At one time in the sixtyies (don't know about now) IH sold governor overhaul kits that contained a new throttle arm and no throttle tube. Only 2 kits were sold for H and W4 through W and F 450 and the only differance was the throttle lever. On aftermarket power governor kits there can be more differances than than IH parts. One other thing that I won't recomend one way or the other but have done for a few others installing a SH or M size carb. and manifold, on a H is the end of the H throttle tube that steps down can be machined back until step is closer to carb. This lets it slide into governor housing enough to make it a lot easyer to remove and install carb. Also remove shaft from governor throttle tube and cut about 1/2 of bushing length from end of tube.Reinstall shaft and drill new hole for pin that holds short lever on end of shaft in the correct index. This will cut down on wear area of throttle tube bushing and shaft but will put end in line to work with verticle rod from governor.

Don't know how much of the governors you are referring to. There was some small changes made over the years but basic differances are, drive gears, throttle tube and the casting it goes in and linkage rod length to throttle tube shaft. H used a throttle tube shorter than SH,300 or 350 and those shafts are different from M.SM,400,450. Later throttle tubes or IH replacments had a seal on throttle shaft inside tube. Casting on governor housing that throttle tube goes in is taller on M to 450 than others.

Got it backwards on one part, the H throttle tube is longer that SH-350.

I can't tell you what the difference is, but Tisco dealers stock separate H governor and M governor rebuilding kits.

The governor housing is the same for the H, M, and SM. For some reason my parts cd is not showing the SH. On the H there is a different housing for the early H's versus the later H's. But that is just the last character which is a revision code.
