Just out of curiousity; Did IH ever produce a front mount 8 Row cultivator that would accomodate 30" rows? If so, how good of a job did they do? Are they easier or harder to operate than a mounted Brillion? Thanks.

Yes they made several models. I have catologs that show a front mount on a 560. I had the opportunity while I was working for an IH dealer in the mid 70's to set up an 8 38" row front mount that mounted on a 66 series tractor. It was similar to 468/68 cultivators. To transport it, you had to fold it forward manually ahead. It had 15" dolly wheels on the outer edges. I saw it sitting in the weeds a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the link Rick. I have never visited that forum before, and will definately be browsing it again.

Does anyone here have any input on whether the front mount cultivators do a better job than rear mounted machines? Thanks.

No, just the opposite.

The old front mounts can't touch a rear mount for accuracy and speed, especially in a rolling type cultivator.

Also, you don't have to "drive" a rear mount like you do a front mount. The stabilizer disc holds a rear mount on the row and allows for "wandering" of the tractor to a certain extent.

Speeds of 5 mph are commonplace on a rear mount while doing a perfect job of cultivating a 2" tall crop. Try that with a front mount and you are down to 1 to 2 mph and then you can't get the soil flow needed to throw the dirt in around the plant.

Allan,I have a set of front mounts with the rolling shields on them and can scoot right along with them. Folks around here started putting them on about 20 years ago to plow tobacco the first time over, just for the increased speed. Most of them came off rear mounted cultivators.

Although the Coffee Shop is ok, the link is the IH tractor forum -- less BS.

Any time you can look right at the row in front of you instead of behind you can do closer cultivation. But, I have never seen a front mount that large. In the area where I live (western KS), there are zero front mount culitvators. They died out as the tractors became larger. You can't exactly drop one of those off like you can a 3-point rear mount.

Unless it is a front mount 3 point, of course, forgot about those.

Just attended a tractor show last weekend in Low Moor Iowa and the discussion came up about front mount vs. rear mount cultivators. The one guy was talking about when they got their first rear mount that they plowed more corn out with that. The reason was when his dad looked back to see what kind of a job he was doing, he would get off the row. You had to learn not to look back with out stopping.
